Wilfred Elam was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire. A Farmer by occupation, he enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force on 28 December 1914, aged 21 years, 8 months. Landed in Gallipoli on 4 August 1915 but was soon evacuated to Alexandria suffering from influenza and was only able to rejoin his unit in Gallipoli in November 1915. Withdrawn to Alexandria in December 1915 and entered France in March 1916. Appointed Lance-Corporal in August 1916. Serving in France with the 2nd Battalion A.I.F., he was killed in action on 9 April 1917. He was buried in the Hermies Hill British Cemetery, Pas de Calais. Wilfred Elam was the son of Louis and Polly Elam, of 30 Raincliffe Road, Leeds. With portrait photograph; damaged named medal card boxes of issue; copied service papers and cap badge added for display purposes.

Private Horace Elam, 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in action on 13 April 1918. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Flanders.
