John Hearn was born in Marylebone, London. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for the East India Company Artillery at Warley, Essex on 4 May 1957, aged 19 years, 6 months. With the Artillery he served in India for over 14 years. Promoted to Bombardier in September 1860, Corporal in November 1861 and Sergeant in February 1862, he attained the rank of Battery Sergeant-Major in June 1866 but was demoted to Gunner in April 1870 after being tried and convicted by the Civil Powers for an offence. Regaining the rank of Sergeant once more in December 1870, he took his discharge in November 1875 having completed his second period of engagement. With copied service papers which confirm the above two medals.
