M.M. London Gazette 17 June 1919.

With a copied newspaper extract giving details of Irvine Dewhirst and the award of his M.M. -

‘Mr and Mrs John Dewhirst, of South Street, Denholme [West Yorkshire], have been notified that their son, Private Irvine Dewhirst, of the West Riding Regiment, has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the field. The commanding officer’s record reads as follows - “For boldness and initiative during the attack on ___ Farm defensive position on October 20, 1918. His platoon was held up by sweeping fire from an enemy machine gun, and he crept up to within fifty yards of the gun in the mist, and by accurate rifle fire knocked out two of the gun team and enabled the remainder to advance and capture the post. A fine example of determination and resource.” Private Dewhirst, who is 24 years of age, enlisted in September, 1916, and has seen active service in France for the last eighteen months. Prior to enlistment he was a playing member of the Denholme Association Football Club, and was employed by Messrs. Reuben Gaunt & Sons, Limited, Farsley.’
