Hammer Price:
£400

An unusual custom built 1821 pattern light cavalry officer’s sword, the straight double-edged 83cm blade of flattened diamond section, by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, Number 30080 for 1890, blade undecorated except for makers cartouche and proof mark which in this case is an ornate etched ‘W’ within the usual cartouche, regulation three-bar steel guard, chequered pommel, fish-skin covered grip bound with silver wire, complete with its steel scabbard with two hanging rings, grip with small area of damage to fish-skin and some service wear overall £250-300

The Wilkinson proof books record sword number 30080 as a light cavalry, straight, January 1st. 1890, but frustratingly no further details are recorded.

The blade is very similar to the so called ‘Handkerchief Cutters’ produced by Wilkinson, several of which were preserved in their museum and subsequently dispersed through auction.
