William Oldfield who was born on 11 July 1929 had a very distinguished career in the R.A.P.C.. He served in the ranks 310 days and then obtained a Short Service Commission in the R.A.P.C on 17 October 1949. He became a Regular 2nd Lieutenant on 11 July 1950 and rose through the ranks becoming a Lieutenant-Colonel on 30 June 1972. Between 24 August 1966 and 19 September 1967 he was Chief Paymaster at HQ Far East Land Forces in Singapore, then served two tours in the M.O.D., the second being the important post of Senior Managing Accountant to the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff. He passed the “Long Finance and Accountancy Course” and qualified to be an Associate Member of British Institute of Managers. He retired from the Army on 23 September 1978.
