Clarence Frederick Ernest Powles was born in Ditchingham, Norfolk on 21 January 1901. He enlisted into the Royal Army Service Corps on 4 May 1921 and served in Iraq, September 1921-April 1922; Near East, September 1922-October 1923, and with the British Expeditionary Force, September 1939-27 May 1940. As a Warrant Officer 1st Class he was discharged on 9 May 1941 having been appointed to a commission in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Served as Acting Captain, April-July 1942; Temporary Captain, July-October 1942; Acting Major, November 1943-January 1944; promoted to Captain, February 1944, he served as Temporary Major, February 1944-May 1950 and was promoted to that rank in September 1950. Awarded a Commendation Card, M.E.P.L. 266, dated 29 June 1945. For several years after the war, Major Powles commanded the 1st Infantry Divisional Ordnance Field Park in both Palestine and North Africa. He relinquished his commission on 1 September 1956 (London Gazette 31 August 1956). He died in Whitby, North Yorkshire in 1986.
