Charles William Giles was born in Worcester on 10 January 1900. He entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 4 February 1918. Advanced to Acting Stoker 1st Class in March 1919 and Stoker 1st Class in October 1919. Discharged in January 1921, he joined the Chatham Royal Fleet Reserve. In 1922 listed as ‘Admiralty: Skilled Labourer (Foreman of Dispensary Stores) at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar’ (London Gazette 7 July 1922). Additionally awarded the Imperial Service Medal (London Gazette 28 April 1961) as ‘Catering Supervisor, R.N. Hospital, Haslar. With copied service paper and other research.
