John Hewitt was born in Southsea, Hampshire on 25 November 1865. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 6 December 1880 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in December 1881. As such he served on H.M.S. Monarch during the Egypt Campaign 1882 and was awarded the Queen’s medal with clasp for Alexandria and the Khedive’s Star 1882. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in November 1883 on H.M.S. Falcon, Able Seaman in October 1886 on H.M.S. Minotaur and Leading Seaman in June 1892 on H.M.S. Emerald. Was briefly a Boatman at Deal and Harwich, February 1893-June 1894 before reverting to his previous rank. Serving on H.M.S. Forte he was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class in December 1895 and 1st Class in October 1896. Served on H.M.S. Goliath, April 1900-June 1901 and was awarded the China Medal 1900. When serving on H.M.S. Australia, June 1902-February 1903, he was awarded the Coronation Medal 1902. Posted ashore in 1908, he returned to the service as Petty Officer 1st Class in August 1914. For most of the war he served aboard the pre-dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Queen, October 1914-February 1917 and was demobilised on 15 May 1919. For his war service he was awarded the 1914-15 Star trio of medals. With copied service paper and roll extracts.
