Albert Field was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. A Groom by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he attested into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps at Leeds on 12 February 1900, aged 18 years, 2 months. Posted to the 4th Battalion, he served in South Africa, March 1901-January 1903 and in Somaliland, January-August 1903. Field purchased his discharge on 20 October 1903. In 1911 he was working as a Tram Conductor for Leeds Corporation. During the Great War he served in the A.S.C. His A.S.C. service number indicates that he served with the Motor Section; given his previous job, it could well have been the Omnibus Section. With copied service papers and other research.
