Augustus Walter Allen was born in Norwich. A Driller by occupation, he attested for the K.R.R.C. at Ipswich on 11 September 1894, aged 18 years, 11 months. In November 1894 he was posted to the 3rd Battalion K.R.R.C. and promoted to Corporal in October 1897. Posted to South Africa in April 1898 and with the 1st K.R.R.C. Mounted Infantry Company in May 1899. Served throughout the Boer War, being promoted to Lance-Serjeant in March 1901 and Serjeant in August 1901. Serjeant Allen, returning to England, was transferred to Section ‘B’ of the Army Reserve on 12 October 1902 and was discharged on 10 September 1906 after completing his service. With the start of the Great War, Allen re-enlisted and was appointed a Serjeant in the 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment. With the regiment he entered France on 30 May 1915. In March 1916 Serjeant Allen was posted to the 1st (Reserve) Garrison Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment in England, being stationed variously at Tilbury, Gravesend and the Isle of Grain. Transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve in February 1919. Augustus Walter Allen died at 3 Norfolk Road, Ipswich, Suffolk on 31 August 1953.
