Three: Squadron Sergeant-Major D. Chapman, 11th Hussars, latterly a Captain in the 2/24th London Regiment

Robert Chapman was born near Cambridge. A Fitter by occupation, he attested for the 11th Hussars at Aldershot on 26 June 1879, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in Egypt, September 1884-July 1885 - served as part of the Light Camel Regiment, taking part in the Gordon Relief Expedition - the 11th Hussars supplied a detachment of 2 officers and 43 other ranks. He then served in South Africa, July 1890-October 1892; India, October 1892-May 1897 and again, September 1897-June 1899. Promoted to Corporal in 1883; Sergeant in 1887 and Squadron Sergeant-Major in 1890. Re-engaged for the 11th Hussars in 1891. On the winning team for the Queens’ Cup for Cavalry (musketry) in 1896 and 1898. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. by A.O.52 of 1898. Discharged having completed his second period of engagement on 1 July 1901. In the Great War he rejoined the Army and was appointed Quartermaster with the honorary rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd/24th London Regiment. Was later appointed Instructor of Catering in the A.S.C. with the rank of Temporary Captain. Later appointed Honorary Captain, relinquishing his commission in October 1919 due to ill health. He died on 1 December 1948.
