James Cecil Balfour Craster was born on 14 July 1854. He received his first commission on 20 November 1875. In Afghanistan he served with the Kurram Field Force; in operations in the Khost Valley, in the advance on Kabul and at the action at Charasia (Medal with clasp). Served in the Salay Expedition in Burma (Medal with clasp). Attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1901 and retired from the Indian Army on 13 June 1902.
