Edmund Styant Williams was born on 13 July 1875 at Gold Tops, Newport, Monmouthshire, the only son of George Waters Williams, J.P., of Llanfrecha, Monmouthshire. He was related to Major-General Sir Edmund Keynton Williams, K.C.B. who at one time commanded the 41st (The Welsh) Regiment and fought under Wellington in the Peninsula. Edmund Styant Williams was educated at King’s School, Warwick and joined the School Cadet Corps, attached to the 2nd Warwick Volunteers. He later became an officer in the unit, being appointed a Captain in 1906 and promoted to Major in 1914. Major Williams, 1st Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment, was killed in action in the trenches whilst repulsing an attack, on 8 May 1915. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. With copied research and a photocopied photograph.
