William Alfred Stuart (note: ‘Stewart’ on medal) was born in Mortlake, London. A Butcher by occupation, he attested for the King’s Royal Rifle Corps at London on 9 July 1900, aged 19 years, 5 months. With the 4th Battalion he served in South Africa, February 1901-November 1902. Served in the 4th Battalion K.R.R.C., 19th Mounted Infantry in Colonel Park’s Column. With the latter, Stuart was severely wounded near Krugerspost, 3 October 1901 when they came under attack by General Viljoen. He was discharged at his own request on 12 November 1902. He later re-enlisted in ‘Kitchener’s New Army’ as Private R28175 - no medals issued. With copied service papers and other research. Note: his papers and the published casualty roll gives his service number as ‘2690’.
