William Young was born in Barony, Glasgow. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Highland Light Infantry at Hamilton on 19 November 1890, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in India, March 1892-November 1898, for which he was awarded the above medal. From the Army Reserve he was recalled to the Colours in October 1899 and served in South Africa, October 1899-September 1902. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with 2 clasps, Cape Colony and Witterbergen and the King’s medal with two clasps. Young was discharged from the Army on 14 November 1902.
