Louis Samuel Hyde Baker was born on 15 April 1858 and was appointed Sub-Lieutenant, unattached, on 26 October 1876. He was appointed to the 1st Foot in October 1876, and transferred to the 83rd Foot in August 1877, before being appointed Lieutenant in the Bombay Staff Corps in August 1878. He served with the 3rd Punjab Cavalry in the Afghan war of 1879-80 and was slightly wounded at Kandahar on 1 September 1880 (despatches London Gazette 30 July 1880; medal with clasp). He was promoted to Captain on 28 October 1888.
