Henry Cowell was appointed Ensign in the 75th Regiment on 12 January 1849, becoming Lieutenant in April 1852 and Captain in October 1858. He afterwards transferred to the 27th Regiment. Captain Cowell served with the 75th Regiment at the battle of Budlee ke Serai, 8 June 1857, and at the siege of Delhi. He was slightly wounded at Dehi Camp on 24 July 1857 (Medal and clasp).
