Army of India 1799-1826, 1 clasp, Bhurtpoor (Lieut. G. Chichester, 59th Foot) short hyphen reverse, officially impressed naming, suspension re-fixed, edge bruise, otherwise very fine £1600-1800

George Chichester was born at Arlington Court, Arlington, Devon, on 5 August 1797, and was appointed Ensign in the 59th Foot on 18 September 1817, becoming Lieutenant on 7 March 1822. He served during the rebellion in Ceylon in 1818-19, and was wounded at the assault on Bhurtpoor. He was promoted to Captain on 12 November 1825, placed on half-pay on 24 August 1832, and was still alive in 1871, living at Great Malvern, in the rank of Major. The Chichester family owned large estates in Devon, much of it now owned by the National Trust, including Arlington Court where a miniature portrait of Major Chichester in uniform is on display.
