Ellson, Royal Army Service Corps; having twice been wounded in North Africa - at “Knightsbridge” and Tobruk - he collected two further wounds in the process of winning his M.M. for delivering ammunition to a forward gun near Caen

M.M. London Gazette 24 January 1946. The original recommendation states:

‘On 11 July 1944, in the Caen sector, as driver of an ammunition lorry, Driver Ellson was engaged in delivering a load of 4.2.-inch mortar ammunition to a forward Gun (A.P.), when the convoy came under heavy enemy shell fire. He carried on despite the danger from both shelling and badly damaged terrain and delivered his load. In doing so he was wounded twice but succeeded in getting his vehicle back nevertheless, and on return was evacuated.

His courage and skill were outstanding, and this despite two previous wounds in action at Knightsbridge and Tobruk in the North African campaign.’

Eric James Ellson was serving in 504 Infantry Brigade Company, R.A.S.C., at the time of the above cited deeds. He was originally recommended for the B.E.M. but this was upgraded to the M.M.
