A post-war R.R.C. group of six attributed to Matron and Hon. Major Margaret Whamond, Territorial Army Nursing Service

Royal Red Cross, 1st Class (R.R.C.), G.VI.R. 1st issue, silver-gilt, gold and enamel, the reverse of the lower arm officially dated ‘1948’; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, clasp, 1st Army; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with oak leaf, mounted court-style as worn, good very fine or better (6) £400-450

Margaret Whamond was appointed a Sister in the Territorial Army Nursing Service in August 1941 and, following service in North Africa, was mentioned in despatches for Italy (
London Gazette 11 January 1945, refers). Following the award of her R.R.C., which she received at an investiture held at Government House, Sydney, Australia in March 1950, she was advanced to Captain in the T.A.N.S., with seniority from September 1945, and was appointed an Hon. Major in February 1951. She was placed on the Territorial Army Reserve of Officers in her married name, Margaret Lambkin, in October 1961; sold with copied research.
