Charles Edward Hope was born in London, England. He served as Trooper in the Imperial Light Horse during the Boer War. Employed as a Carpenter, he served in the South African Engineering Corps, briefly in 1915. He then attested for the South African Expeditionary Force at Roberts Heights on 30 May 1916 and was posted to the South African Mounted Engineers. Suffering from malaria and dysentery, he was discharged in March 1918 being found permanently unfit for tropical service and temporary unfit for non-tropical service.
