France, L’Abbé de la Mennais, 1831, a uniface cast bronze medal by D. d’Angers, bust right, 138mm (Reinis 261; BDM I, 526). High relief, good very fine, nicely patinated, rare; with integral suspension loop (£80-100)

Hugues-Félicité-Robert, Abbé de la Mennais (1782-1854), French philosopher and theologian from St Malo, was a religious activist at the time of Napoleon and sought refuge in London during the Hundred Days, 1815. In later life he was active in the 1848 Revolution and served with the Constituent Assembly until the coup d’état by Napoleon III in 1852
