Elagabalus (218-222), Denarius, Antioch, laureate and draped bust right, rev. slow quadriga bearing conical stone of Elagabalus of Emesa, 2.82gm (RIC 195; C 268). Obverse pitted, this only fair, reverse somewhat better, rare (£40-50)
Elagabalus became emperor after the execution of Macrinus in 218, but did not set out for Rome until the following year. The imperial party brought with them to Rome the famous black stone of Emesa, symbol of the sun god Elagabalus
