Hammer Price:
£1,200

Greek Coinages, GAUL, Quarter-Stater, 3rd-2nd century BC, diademed head right with elaborate hairstyle and trefoil ear-ring, ornament below neck, rev. horse left, rider holding torc, large bird in front, quatrefoil in field, pseudo-legend in exergue, 2.03g (DT 28; LT 8390; Sills class I, 229). Cut in antiquity, extremely fine and of accomplished style, extremely rare £1,200-1,500

This early and rare issue of Gaulish coins was centred on the valley of the Somme between the river Oise and the Channel coast. Delestrée and Tache list two examples in the Bibliotheque Nationale while Sills gives findspots for three similar half-staters found in Essex and Kent (Gaulish and Early British Gold Coinage, pp.59-60)
