Tickets and Checks (Post-1830), Peel, Brown’s Drapery, white metal, unsigned, 1887, from the same obv. die as Lot 407, rev. jubilee year or any other year, etc, edge plain, 30mm, 12.36g/12h (W & E –; Quarmby –; Mackay –). Pierced as issued, minor scuffing in obverse field, otherwise extremely fine and extremely rare; only five specimens known £300-400

Provenance: Arthur Brown, by family descent; R. Cain Collection, Spink Auction 145, 12-14 July 2000, lot 2803 (part) [acquired November 1989].

Arthur Brown, proprietor of Brown’s drapery shop, 4-5 Market street, fl. 1887-94. By 1900 he had moved to Seamount, Ramsey, and opened a second shop, Glasgow House, in Ramsey’s Market place, and disposed of the Peel business (Alan Kelly, pers. comm.)
