Henry George Burbidge was born in Steeple Ashton, Trowbridge, Wiltshire on 14 May 1861. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the R.M.L.I. at Bristol on 14 January 1881. Served on H.M.S. Minotaur, June 1882-September 1884, seeing service in Egypt; on H.M.Y. Osborne, April 1885-June 1889, and on H.M.S. Monarch, March 1898-December 1901, seeing service during the Second Boer War. In November 1901 he was N.C.O. in charge of the Naval Magazine Guard at Simonstown. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in June 1896. In March 1902 he received his discharge from the service and was enrolled into the Royal Fleet Reserve.
