Private Arthur Hawkwood, 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 11 September 1914. The battalion was posted to the 14th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Army Corps. Hawkwood joined the regiment on the Aisne and was soon involved in fighting around the villages of St. Marguerite and Missy. The regiment then moved north of Givenchy, near the village of Richebourg. During October the regiment was involved in the heavy fighting at La Bassee and Gheluvelt. Hawkwood was wounded whilst serving in trenches near Maricourt on the Somme in December 1916. Invalided home, he died of his wounds on 17 January 1916, aged 20 years. He was buried in Tooting (St. Nicholas) Churchyard. He was the son of Mrs Hawkwood, of 28 Brightwell Crescent, Tooting.

With original forwarding slip for the British War and Victory Medals, addressed to ‘Miss Winifred Hawkwood, c/o Mr H. A. Hawkwood, 28 Brightwell Crescent, Tooting.’; together with damaged card box of issue and registered envelope for these medals. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
