Private John J. Cocks, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 6 October 1914. The regiment formed part of 20th Infantry Brigade, 7th Division in Rawlinson’s IV Army Corps. Was caught up in the Ypres defence and was likely to have faced the German attack at Kruiseik on the 19-21 October 1914. IV Corps front ran from Zandvoorde, east to Kruiseik and then four miles to Zonnebeke. At Gheluvelt on 27 October 1914, the 1st Guards Brigade was attacked by three battalions of the German 6th Bavarian Reserve Division. The 1/Grenadier Guards lost 19 officers and 470 ORs; 5 officers and 192 men survived. John Cocks would have been one of the survivors. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
