William Pateman enlisted on 13 October 1913. Serving with the 11th Hussars, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 20 August 1914, his unit being part of the 1st Cavalry Brigade. Involved in the actions at Le Quesnoy and Solesmes, rearguard work at Le Cateau, the battle of Nery, 1 September 1914 and the battles on Marne, 9 September 1914. Pateman later served in the Labour Corps and 8th Battalion London Regiment, from which he was discharged on 6 September 1919, aged 38 years, due to sickness and awarded the Silver War Badge (not in lot). With copied m.i.c. and roll extract; clasp confirmed.
