George McCartney was born in Dreghorn, lived at Stevenston and enlisted at Aberdeen. Originally served in the Royal East Kent Yeomanry. When serving in the Household Battalion, he died of wounds on 13 April 1917, aged 20 years. He was buried in the Haute-Avesnes British Cemetery. He was the son of George and Jeanie Clark McCartney.
