Private John Sheridan, 2nd Battalion Connaught Rangers, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 14 August 1914. The battalion distinguished itself at the battle of Le Grand Fayt, 26 November 1914. In a rearguard action covering the retreat of the British 5th Infantry Brigade, the battalion came under intense fire. Withdrawing in good order, by the next day, 6 officers and 280 other ranks were listed as missing in action. Having suffered terrible losses, the 2nd Battalion was absorbed into the 1st on 5 December 1914. Sheridan was later transferred to the Labour Corps. With copied m.i.c.
