Pair: Sergeant-Bugler B. Sheriff, 60th Regiment

Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (1318 Pte. B. Sheriff, 2/60th Foot); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse ((1318 Sergt. B. Sherrif, K.R. Rif. C.) note different spelling of surname, edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine and better (2) £200-250

Benjamin Sheriff was born in Shadwell, Middlesex on 14 December 1851. He enlisted into the K.R.R.C. at Westminster on 9 October 1866, being promoted from Boy to Rifleman in December 1866 having attained the age of 15 years. With the regiment he served overseas in India, September 1867-December 1878; Afghanistan, December 1878-September 1879; India, September 1879-January 1881 and South Africa, January 1881-January 1882. He saw active service in the Second Afghan War and the First Boer War, being awarded a medal for the first campaign. Latterly awarded the L.S. & G.C. with gratuity. He was promoted to Corporal in November 1883, Sergeant (Band Sergeant) in June 1884 and Sergeant Bugler in July 1885. Sheriff was discharged at Carlow in October 1887 having completed his second period of limited engagement. With copied service papers and other research.
