Three: Assistant Surgeon A. E. T. Longhurst, 13th Light Infantry

Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Asst. Staff Surgeon A. E. Longhurst) contemporary engraved naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Asst-Surgn. A. E. T. Longhurst, 1st Bn. 13th Lt. Infy.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (A. E. Longhurst Asst. Staff Surgeon) impressed naming, ‘eon’ of ‘Surgeon’ corrected, plugged and fitted with a (slack) ‘Mutiny’ style suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, fine and better (3) £380-420

Arthur Edwin Temple Longhurst was born in Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire on 17 November 1831. Training for the medical profession he gained a M.D. at St. Andrews in 1862. Appointed Acting Assistant Surgeon in October 1854 and Assistant Surgeon to the Staff, 3 November 1854; to the 13th L.I. in December 1857 and to the Staff in February 1863. In the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, 1857-59, he was present in the actions at Judespore and was mentioned in despatches for ‘untiring zeal and courageous attention throughout the day’; also present at Toolsepore. Promoted to Surgeon on the Staff in May 1867 and Surgeon in the 60th Rifles in January 1869. Appointed Surgeon Major in the Army Medical Department in May 1867. Retired on Half Pay on 30 June 1875.
