Kenneth MacDonald was born on 14 August 1873, son of Lieutenant-Colonel C. E. MacDonald, late R.M.L.I. He entered the Army as 2nd Lieutenant in the R.M.L.I. on 1 September 1891, becoming Lieutenant on 1 July 1892. He transferred to the Army Service Corps prior to service in the Sudan campaign in 1898 (Medal and Egyptian Medal). He next served on the west coast of Africa, 1898-99 (Medal and clasp), and became Captain in 1899. Captain MacDonald served in the South African War 1899-1902; was mentioned in despatches and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette 27 September 1901), ‘in recognition of services during the operations in South Africa.’
