William Coulthard was born in Liverpool. A Bricklayer by occupation, he attested for the 13th Brigade at Liverpool on 13 December 1877, aged 20 years. Posted to the 8th Foot, he transferred to the 91st Foot in February 1879, with whom he served in South Africa, February 1879-December 1885. Transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1886, he was discharged on 20 April 1890. With copied service papers and roll extract.
