A Great War D.C.M. group of four awarded to Warrant Officer Class 1 A. E. Laurence, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment

Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (10927 R.S. Mjr. A. Laurence, 9/N. & D.R.); 1914 Star, with clasp (10927 C.S.M. A. Laurence, 9th N. & D. Regt.), renamed; British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oak leaf (10927 T.W.O. Cl. 1 A. E.Lawrence, Notts. & Derby. R.), note surname spelling, together with the recipient’s Great War period wrist watch, the protective lid engraved, ‘R.S.M. A. E. Laurence, 9th S.F., 1917’, edge scratched between number and rank on the first, polished overall, thus good fine (4) £800-1000

D.C.M. London Gazette 1 January 1918:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His untiring energy, coupled with his fine powers of organisation, cheerfulness and courage under most trying conditions, have greatly contributed to the success of the Battalion.’

Albert E. Laurence was embarked for France as a member of the 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, on 3 September 1914. Subsequently transferred to the 9th Battalion, it was in this capacity that he was awarded the D.C.M. for his gallant deeds as a Company Sergeant-Major during the course of 1917.

Laurence was discharged from the Sherwood Foresters in 1922, at which stage he was intending to join the Tyrone Special Constabulary as an instructor at Omagh.

Sold with a quantity of original documentation, including certificates of proficiency for the Special Rifle Course, Instructor’s Course, Warrant Officer’s Course, and Small Arms Course, together with related research.
