Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880 (588/656 Prive. J. Tonner, 72nd Highlanders) good very fine £240-280

James Tonner was born in Rutherglen, Glasgow. A Miner by occupation, he attested for the 58th Brigade at Glasgow on 3 March 1876, aged 19 years, 3 months. With the 72nd Highlanders he served in India, December 1878-December 1881 and was awarded the Afghanistan Medal with clasps for Charasia, Kabul and Kandahar and the Kabul to Kandahar Star. He was discharged to the Reserve in March 1882 but recalled in August and posted to the 1st Battalion Royal Highlanders. With them he served in Egypt, August 1882-December 1882 and was awarded the Egypt Medal with clasp to Tel-el-Kebir and the Khedive’s Star. He was re-transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1883 and discharged in March 1888. With copied service papers.
