Pair: Private W. J. Thorp, 5th Battalion Australian Infantry, wounded in action, 29 September 1918

William Joseph Thorp was born in Plaistow, London. A Farm Worker by occupation, he attested for the A.I.F. at Melbourne on 11 November 1914, aged 21 years, 1 month. Serving with the 5th Australian Infantry, he sailed from Melbourne on H.M.A.T. Clan McGillivray on 2 February 1915 and served in Gallipoli. Transferred to the 57th Battalion in February 1916. From England he proceeded to France in November 1916. Accidentally sprained his ankle in February 1917 and was treated in hospital. Was wounded in action on 29 September 1918 - gunshot wound to buttocks - and was invalided to England. He was discharged from the 5th Pioneers in London on 14 May 1919. With a number of copied service papers.
