Ernest Edgar Hewes was born at Valetta, Malta, on 17 September 1868, and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Athlone on 17 November 1882, aged 14 years 2 months. He went to India in September 1885 and transferred to the Bombay Unattached List as Store Sergeant with the Ordnance Corps. He served on the North West Frontier, Mohmand 1897-98 (Medal and clasp) and in Tirah 1897-98 (clasp). He was commissioned as Assistant Commissary (Hon. Lieut.) in April 1915; Deputy Commissary (Hon. Capt.) September 1917; and Commissary (Hon. Major) February 1919, and retired shortly afterwards.
