A scarce Northern Ireland B.E.M. pair awarded to Staff Sergeant R. Paine, Intelligence Corps, who was decorated for his services in the period February to April 1978

B.E.M. London Gazette 19 September 1978:

‘In recognition of meritorious service in Northern Ireland during the period 1 February to 30 April 1978.’

Roger Paine, who was born in February 1949, enlisted in the Intelligence Corps in February 1967, and is verified as having participated in the Dhofar operations, in addition to service as a Military Intelligence Officer and Field Intelligence N.C.O. in Northern Ireland, in which disciplines he qualified in July 1976 - a copied page from his Regular Army Certificate of Service refers. The same source states that he was serving as an Operator in Intelligence and Security at the time of his discharge in January 1980.

An accompanying copied newspaper report states that Paine returned to Belfast to set up Intercity Investigations Ltd., but was compelled to quit Ulster on being accused of using the company as a cover for military undercover work - according to him a matter of malicious rumour occasioned by his dismissal of a “Walter Mitty” character who worked as head of his Dublin office.

Also sold with a small engraved plaque ‘Presented to S. Sgt. Roger Paine from all M.I.Os and F.I.N.C.Os, Belfast Region’, together with recipient’s original Intelligence Corps Association membership card, dated March 1976.
