Walter Patrick Mullane, who was born in October 1890, went out to France as a Corporal in the Army Service Corps in January 1915, and remained similarly employed until October of the same year, when he was ordered to the Salonika front. Awarded the M.S.M. for his services in that theatre of war (
London Gazette 26 April 1917, refers), he was subsequently mentioned in General G. F. Milne’s despatch of 11 February 1920 in respect of his ‘continuous, distinguished and devoted services’ during the evacuation of the Caucasus by the British Army of the Black Sea 1919-20.

Having then been awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal and been advanced to Warrant Officer Class 1, Mullane was commissioned as a Lieutenant (Q.M.) in October 1935, and gained advancement to Captain (Q.M.) in October 1941 and to Major (Q.M.) in October 1944, about the time he was actively employed in North-West Europe. Awarded the M.B.E. in the summer of 1947, he was finally placed on the Retired List in September of the following year.
