British War Medal 1914-20 (1764 Pte G. Hyland, 5 Bn. A.I.F.) minor edge bruising, good very fine £60-80

George Hyland was born in Hesket, Victori. He enlisted in the A.I.F. at Melbourne on 4 January 1915. He embarked for the war on 13 April 1915 and served at Gallipoli near Quinn’s Post. In September 1915 he was evacuated to Lemnos then Alexandria due to sickness and in February 1916 he was evacuated to Australia suffering from enteric fever. Recovering, he embarked from Melbourne on 19 February 1917, sailing on H.M.A.T. Ballarat. This ship was torpedoed by a German submarine near England on 25 April 1917 but all the troops were saved. Posted to France in August 1917, he was wounded in action near Passchendaele with shrapnel to the face on 20 September 1917 and was evacuated to England. Making a recovery, he was returned to France in May 1918. He was killed in action near Lihons on 9 August 1918 and buried in the Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France. With copied research.
