Anglo-Boer War Medal 1899-1902 (Burg. M. J. Joubert), good very fine £150-200

Marthinus Johannes Joubert joined the Carolina Commando in September 1899 and fought through the war as a bitter-ender. After taking part in the action at Elandslaagte, the Carolina Commando was at the forefront at Spion Kop, taking the brunt of the early morning action until reinforcements arrived at 0930 hours. In leading his men the Commandant told them - “Burghers, we are going in against the enemy and we shall not all return. Do you duty and trust in the Lord.” The outnumbered force duly held its ground but at great cost, no less than 50 being killed or wounded. Joubert survived and later fought at Gras Nek, Triotsrand and Nelsberg; sold with further details.
