William Sprong was born in Woking, Surrey. A Gardener by occupation, he attested for General Service at Lambeth Police Court on 15 September 1874, aged 18 years, 7 months. Posted to the 2nd Battalion 16th Regiment, he served in the East Indies, February 1876-October 1884 and South Africa, February 1900-September 1901. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1892. Promoted to Colour Sergeant in 1886 and Quartermaster Serjeant in 1893.

Discharged at his own request on 14 December 1901.
