Herbert James Darby was born in Maidstone, Kent. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for the 16th Lancers at Canterbury on 19 April 1892, aged 20 years, 2 months. With the regiment he served in India, February 1893-January 1900 and in South Africa, January 1900-March 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1902 and discharged on 18 April 1904 having completed his period of service. With copied service papers.
