William Alfred Lawrence Lewis was born in West Derby, Liverpool. An Engineer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he attested for the 11th Hussars at London on 22 December 1886, aged 19 years, 3 months. He served in South Africa, July 1890-October 1892 but deserted, November 1890-September 1891. With the regiment he then served in India, October 1892-October 1899. Service in South Africa followed, October 1899-October 1902, where he served with a detachment of the 11th Hussars attached to the 5th Lancers. He took his free discharge on 24 January 1903.
