Humphrey Gilbert Hay was born in Elgin, Scotland, in August 1896, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service as a Mechanic in June 1915. Appointed an Air Mechanic 1st Class in September of the same year, he was attached to the Armoured Car Section and served out in France in that capacity from December 1917 - his service record is endorsed with a ‘Service in Land Operations’ stamp. He was demobilised in April 1919, having latterly held an appointment on the books of President V, home to No. 20 Squadron of the Armoured Car Section, an experimental arm of the Landships Committee; sold with brief research and an original portrait photograph.
