Wilfred Southall Wigham was born in Chungking, China on 30 October 1895, the son of missionaries Rev. Leonard and Caroline Wingham. He came to England with his parents in 1905 aboard the Prinzregent Luitpold. At the time of the 1911 Census he was a Boarder at Bootham School, East Yorkshire. During the Great War he served as an Orderly with the Friends (Quakers) Ambulance Unit at Dunkirk, under the auspices of the British Red Cross Society, entering the France/Flanders theatre of war on 13 November 1914. A note with the lot indicates he was awarded the Croix de Guerre (not confirmed). Wilfred Wigham died in December 1977.
