Edmund Beard Tincombe was born in Honiton, Devon. A Coach Builder by occupation and a member of the 4th (Militia) Battalion Devonshire Regiment, he attested for short service in the Army Service Corps at Honiton on 8 August 1889, aged 19 years, 4 months. He served at Home and was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1894. Recalled to active service on 9 October 1899, he served in South Africa, October 1899-August 1902. He was discharged on 22 August 1902. Tincombe served in the Great War as a Wheeler Staff Sergeant, entering France on 19 May 1915 and being entitled to a 1914-15 Star trio.
