William Maurice Crombie was born in 1893, the son of Dr. James Crombie of Sidcup, Kent, and was educated at Epsom College, 1907-11. Awarded the Watts Prize for Science. Then at St. Thomas Hospital and the London University he gained the degrees M.B., B.S., M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P.

Joining the Indian Medical Service as a Lieutenant on 23 January 1917, he was appointed a Temporary Captain in May 1917 but died of disease in India the following year.
